Renewing Your Commission

Renewing your commission is basically the same as applying for a new commission. You must still meet all of the requirements:

     ·   Take a notary training course
     ·   Take the written exam
     ·   File your oath and bond with the county clerk within 30 days of receiving your commission
     ·   Have your fingerprints taken
     ·   Obtain a new notary seal

The necessary information to renew your commission can be obtained from CPS Testing Services notary.cps.ca.gov, or phone (916) 263-3520.  Leave your name and address on their message machine, and you will receive an application, instructions, a handbook, and registration information of when and where to take the test.

If you had previously completed a State-approved six-hour Notary training course and you wish to renew your commission, you will be required to take a three-hour refresher course.  The three-hour refresher course will then be required for each subsequent time you wish you renew. 

It is recommended that you begin the renewal process six months prior to the expiration of your current commission.
